Southern California Sports Update
November 21st, 2009 | by ahfischman |This update is intended to update you Southern California sports’ fans on your favorite teams. Included will be the goings-on of the Lakers, Clippers, USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, and Los Angeles Galaxy. I will pick back up with the Dodgers within a few days.
First of all, Pau Gasol returned to the Lakers on Thursday night with a dominant performance as the Lake Show topped the Bulls. In Davis Sports Deli’s exclusive interview with Fox Sports Net reporter Michael Eaves, Eaves discusses Gasol’s significance to the Lakers’ success: Eaves Interview
Jonathan Santiago and myself further probed Mike Eaves on the Dunleavy situation. At the time of the interview, the Clippers had only won 4 of their first 13 games. Though the Clips won Friday night against a quality Nuggets’ squad, there is still some trouble brewing in Clipperland. Season-ticket holders have an online petition going around, which asks Owner Donald Sterling and Team President Andy Roeser to dismiss Dunleavy Sr. immediately. Even those who like him would like Dunleavy to give up either his head coaching role or his General Manager position. Also, Eaves briefly discussed the great success that center Chris Kaman has had in the early going despite his team’s struggles.
Finally, before dismissing Mr. Eaves from his duties as an interviewee, Santiago and myself asked Pac-10 football. Eaves talked about the year that USC has had and gave his best explanation as to why the Trojans were not nearly as dominant as in year’s past.
Though not discussed in the interview, UCLA now stands at 3-5 in Pac-10 play, but they have won three straight. Remember, they began conference play with 5 consecutive losses. Since, they have beat both Washington schools (the Huskies and Cougars), as well as defeating the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday, November 21st. Their final game of the season will be against the rival USC Trojans. The game will be played at the Los Angeles Coliseum just a few days after Turkey Day.
Finally, your Los Angeles Galaxy are headed to the MLS Cup to face Real Salt Lake. Real Salt Lake barely made the playoffs as they limped in with a losing record, but games are not won on paper. For this reason, the games are played and the Galaxy cannot afford to take their opponent lightly. This year’s MLS Champion will be determined (in a single match) on Sunday, November 22nd in Seattle, Washington.
*The Galaxy’s last won the MLS Cup in 2005.
Thanks for reading this update all around Los Angeles sports. More on the Dodgers to come! Stay tuned.
