Chip Caray, TBS Split

November 30th, 2009 | by ahfischman |

This is not exactly a Dodger-related article, but I thought I would pass along this piece on TBS and Chip Caray’s supposedly “mutual” decision to part ways.

Here’s the article: Chip Caray Update.

This not even an article. It doesn’t even take a stand or a certain perspective. It is merely a narrative on the latest with Chip Caray and TBS. For that reason, I’ll give you my take:

I hate to criticize or jab at others, but Chip Caray, frankly, was failing as a play-by-play man on TBS. I would recommend that he not be hired by a major television network. While I would expect him to at least latch on with a regional sports station, Caray rarely does more than confuse the viewers/listeners. In the one-game playoff between the Tigers and Twins, Caray botched a crucial call on a fly ball double play when he accidentally said, “Line drive, base hit!”. He did not even correct himself. He makes major gaffes such as these as well as more minor, subtle ones. Caray also overuses the verb “fisted” as in, “Ronnie Belliard fists the ball over to second base. It means that a player got jammed, but in order to be a more successful broadcaster, Caray must diversify. In other words, he should buy and implore the use of a thesaurus. He will also have to stop making so many mistakes.

I realize that Chip Caray is a mere mortal like the rest of us. Mistakes do happen. I’m also not saying that I would make a better broadcaster than ole’ Chip.  At this point, I would not. I’m just giving my two cents on his recent broadcasting performance, which has been lackluster, to say the least. I think he can improve if he works at it. I also believe that he will catch on with some team or network to continue his broadcasting career. While it is entirely possible that Chip Caray was asking for too much money, I think that TBS also considered his proneness to error when deciding not to continue their partnership.
